Curtefranca

Wine · PDO · 19 municipalities

Recognized since 2009 in Lombardy, the Curtefranca DOC covers 19 distinct municipalities, including Adro and Capriolo. This still wine appellation maintains a unique one-way relationship with its famous sparkling neighbor, Franciacorta DOCG: while Franciacorta DOCG vineyards can be reclassified to Curtefranca Bianco through the scelta vendemmiale process, Curtefranca wines can never be upgraded. The denomination strictly caps its grape yield-to-wine ratio at 68% for all styles. For the red blends, Curtefranca relies on a distinctive history with Carmenere—locally designated as 'bordò magher' and long confused with Cabernet Franc—which gained formal recognition in the official production rules in 2008.
