Established in 1999 across 33 municipalities of Emilia-Romagna, including Bastiglia and Bomporto, the Modena DOC is distinct for rejecting any aged Riserva categories in favor of twelve fresh, young tipologie. This denomination encompasses not only red and rosato Lambrusco but also white styles using Montuni or Trebbiano grapes. Uniquely, non-VSQ versions may retain a natural sediment veil, or velatura, in the bottle. To maintain strict visual typicity, the regulations dictate that any Lambrusco exceeding color-intensity thresholds between 17 and 25 must be stripped of the DOC title and reclassified as IGT Emilia.
