Montefalco Sagrantino
Wine · PDO · 5 municipalities
In the Umbrian hills of Bevagna and Montefalco, the Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG stands apart from neighboring denominations by requiring a strict 100% Sagrantino grape composition. This monovarietal focus produces an intense ruby red wine that turns garnet with age. To develop its character, the production rules mandate an exceptionally long minimum ageing period of 37 months, beginning on December 1st of the harvest year. For the dry Secco style, this aging must include at least 12 months in wood and four months of bottle refinement, resulting in a dry, harmonious profile with a distinct aroma of blackberries.
