Piemonte
Wine · PDO · 683 municipalities
Recognised since 2004, the Piemonte DOC acts as a vast regional umbrella denomination covering 683 municipalities, including Alba and Acqui Terme. What distinguishes this DOC from its neighbors is its immense breadth and unique reclassification rule: vintage-declared harvest surplus from any other DOC or DOCG zone within the Piedmont region can be legally reclassified under the Piemonte designation. The denomination covers dozens of style combinations; the base white wine requires a minimum of 60% Cortese, Chardonnay, Favorita, or Erbaluce, with a maximum yield of 14.0 tons per hectare and a minimum alcohol level of 9.5% vol.
