Recognised since 1973, the Marche region's Rosso Piceno DOC stands apart from other red denominations by completely omitting a "Riserva" category. Instead, aging prestige is reserved for the "Superiore" sub-type. Sourced from a restricted southern sub-zone that includes Ascoli Piceno, this wine restricts yields to 12 tonnes per hectare and requires a mandatory de facto aging period of roughly one year, preventing release before 1 November of the year following harvest. This distinguishes it from the base blend, which combines a minimum of 35% Montepulciano and 15% Sangiovese to achieve its characteristic, delicate aroma and pleasantly dry flavor.
