Province of Macerata

Cradling over 300,000 residents within its undulating Marche hills, Macerata carves out a distinct viticultural identity defined by high-altitude, landlocked terroirs rather than coastal breezes. Across its 55 municipalities, the province boasts 21 protected denominations, driven by 80 verified producers. It is here, in the mountain-shielded valley of Matelica, that Verdicchio acquires its steelier, mineral-forward backbone, contrasting sharply with its maritime cousins. More unique still is Serrapetrona, where the rare Vernaccia di Serrapetrona DOCG undergoes a complex triple-fermentation of partially dried grapes, yielding a sparkling red wine found nowhere else on earth.
