Basilicata's entire DOCG wine production is concentrated on the extinct volcano of Mount Vulture, where 35 producers bottle Aglianico del Vulture Superiore across a zone of 15 municipalities. This volcanic enclave stands in sharp contrast to the arid southern clay ravines near the town of Tursi, which hosts 10 overlapping protected denominations. Further west, the microclimates of Rotonda support specialized crops within their 4 designated municipalities. Across these extreme geographical shifts, the region claims 21 protected denominations in total, defining a highly localized agrarian map where rugged terrain dictates production boundaries.
